Secondhand September

Take the Secondhand September challenge which encourages consumers to only shop secondhand items throughout the month of September.

Climate change is upon us at an alarming rate and if we can do something to slow it down as much as possible, then why shouldn’t we act NOW?  We live in times where fast fashion has taken over the clothing racks in our homes. Fast fashion can be defined as cheap, trendy clothing that samples ideas from the catwalk or celebrity culture and turns them into garments in high street stores at breakneck speed to meet consumer demand. One of the problems with said fashion is that it changes with every season and most of the time multiple times per season; it is cheaply made so it can be cheaply priced and mass produced. What does this mean for the environment? Outrageous pollution. Pollution of the waters through toxic chemicals used for the mass production, and air pollution through toxic chemicals used for the mass production and the increase of textiles going to waste since everyone is in a rush to buy more and more trending clothing. Basically, fast fashion has negative impacts on the environment any way we look at it.

How can you be part of Secondhand September?

You can purchase secondhand clothing and shoes at your local thrift/consignment store, you can also repair by sewing the sweater in your closet that has a tiny hole, and you can most definitely rewear the jacket you used last winter.

HERE ARE 5 R’S YOU CAN CONSIDER TO BE PART OF SECONDHAND SEPTEMBER:

  1. REDUCE
  2. REWEAR
  3. RECYCLE
  4. REPAIR
  5. RESELL
